The Mamas and The Papas came to define the sound of the 1960s. “Papa” Denny Doherty, co-writer, charts the meteoric rise and eventual fall of the group. From exuberant beginnings in the small clubs of Greenwich Village to backstage at The Ed Sullivan Show, come experience some California dreams brought to life.

Grant Watkins (John) is very happy to return to Actor's Theatre Charlotte, where he was seen in last season's BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON (Calhoun). Since then Grant has performed in PaperHouse Theatre's THE ALIENS (KJ), Three Bone Theatre's SHAKESPEARE'S R&J (Nurse/Tybalt) and Charlotte Shakespeare's LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST (Costard). He is grateful for the opportunity to dive into the timeless and beautiful music of The Mamas and The Papas and couldn't have asked for a better cast and crew. Much love and many thanks to Mom, Dad and Jan.
Caroline Bower (Michelle). Since receiving her BFA in Music Theatre from Elon University Caroline has performed in NYC, on national tours and in her home base of Charlotte, NC. Local audiences have seen her work with Actors Theatre of Charlotte (EVIL DEAD, DIVINE SISTER, BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK), CPCC Summer Theatre (THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE), Children’s Theatre of Charlotte (THE WIZARD OF OZ, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, PETER PAN, THE SECRET GARDEN) and The Machine (THE BALD SOPRANO, MUM’S THE WORD, A GUIDE FOR THE NEWLY DEAD, BOHEMIAN GROVE). Caroline is thrilled to be back at ATC! Love to the fam and MBC.
Brianna Susan Smith (Cass) is excited and grateful to make her debut at ATC. Smith is a graduate of Catawba College with a BFA in Musical Theatre and has worked as a performer, director, technician and educator across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region. Smith has worked with various theatre companies around the Charlotte area. Notable roles include REEFER MADESS (Mae), FALSETTOS (Trina), FAT PIG (Helen), CIVIL WAR (Nurse), SPAMALOT (Lady of the Lake), OPHELOS (Queen), and RAGTIME (Emma Goldman) for which she won Best Supporting Actress from the Metrolina Theatre Association, She was named Emerging Artist of the Year in 2011 and nominated for Theatre Person of the Year in 2013.
Jon Parker Douglas (Denny) is over the moon to be back performing at ATC. Other ATC credits include SLUT: THE MUSICAL (Dan), BAT BOY (Bat Boy), EVIL DEAD (Ash), and FIVE COURSE LOVE (Rambo Cupid, et al). JPD was last seen as an ethereal tour guide in the final installment of Machine Theatre's BOHEMIAN GROVE (Nurse) trilogy this summer. Other shows PETER PAN (Hook), TREASURE ISLAND (Ben Gunn), TALES OF A FOURTH GRADE NOTHING (Fudge), and THE PRODUCERS (Carmen Ghia). In NYC, JPD has appeared in THREE KISSES (Chris) and toured with DUCK FOR PRESIDENT (Braidbeard). In LA, HUNGER GAME OF THRONES (John) and FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER (Konstantine). Matt Cosper (Lou Adler, Albert, Cook, Duffy). Charlotte audiences have seen Matt's work onstage with ATC’s YANKEE TAVERN, CAST’s KILLER JOE, Children's Theatre of Charlotte’s PETER PAN and Paperhouse Theatre’s LA RONDE, THE ALIENS. Matt is the founding director of Machine, an ensemble of queen city artists creating original works for performance. Original works created with Machine include MUM'S THE WORD, THOMTHOM, OVER THERE (w/ Ila Prouty at The Turchin Center) and BOHEMIAN GROVE. XOXO to CarrieEmB and the rest of the gang.
Joseph Klosek (Scott McKenzie, Richard Byrne, Tim Rose, John Sebastian, Nigel, sailor, Barry McGuire, Roger McGuinn). This is his 10th year performing in shows for Actor's Theatre. His first was TICK, TICK, BOOM! and he has been seen on this stage in JOHNNY GUITAR, THE MUSICAL, INTIMATE APARREL, CHAPS!, 5 COURSE LOVE, NATURAL SELECTION, and one of the many elves who performed the SANTALAND DIARIES. He was seen Off-Broadway in the original Mac Wellman production of TALLAHASSEE, and was a part of the creative team that brought to life Disney's DOUG LIVE! He especially would like to send his warmest thanks to the staff, crew, director, and performers in this show for their kindness and support.
Chaz (Jimmy, salesman, Mr. Jones, Gene Clark) is excited to be back on the ATC stage for the first time since 2009's BAT BOY. Recent credits include LOVE’S LABOR’S LOST with Charlotte Shakespeare, THE RELUCTANT DRAGON with Children's Theatre of Charlotte, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF with Caper Fear Regional Theatre, and RUDOLPH THE RED NOSE REINDEER with Atlanta's Center for Puppetry Arts.
Nicia Carla (Jill, waitress, Brenda, Emily, Carmella, Gloria) is making her third appearance on the ATC stage having previously been seen in BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON as Rachel, and last summer's DIVINE SISTER as Mrs. Levinson and Timmy. Other favorite roles include PAPERHOUSE THEATRE, WE WON'T PAY, WE WON'T PAY as Antonia, CHILDREN'S THEATRE of CHARLOTTE, CHARLOTTE'S WEB as Fern, THE BORROWERS as Homily, AND THEN THEY CAME FOR ME as Eva, and THE MACHINE, BOHEMIAN GROVE as Carmella Tampone. Nicia is also a director whose most recent work includes last season's VENUS IN FUR at ATC and THE SCHOOL FOR WIVES with Paperhouse Theatre.
